Château Estate with Private Chapel

€1,106,000

An 1893 French Château with a Consecrated Chapel and 27 Hectares

I’m fascinated by this one because it feels less like buying a château and more like taking on an entire little world of your own.

The château itself is beautiful, but for me it’s the completeness of the estate that makes it special. There’s the private chapel, still consecrated more than 130 years after it was built, the tree-lined avenues, guest houses, farmhouse, barns, stable and more than 27 hectares of land. It has the feeling of an intact historic domain rather than simply a large French house with acreage.

I also love that the interiors haven’t been polished into a generic idea of château luxury. There are worn timber floors, old doors, fireplaces, imperfect walls and wonderfully atmospheric rooms that still feel like they belong to an old family home. And that staircase is particularly lovely.

Of course, an estate of this scale comes with considerable responsibility. Multiple houses, four barns, a chapel, a château and 27 hectares all need to be maintained. But that is also what makes this property so intriguing: there is an extraordinary amount here, and so many possibilities for how it could be used.

Set near Saint-Gaultier in Indre, the estate centres around an imposing château built in 1893, offering approximately 750 m² of stated living space across three floors.

The ground floor is arranged around an impressive entrance hall and winding staircase, with four generously proportioned reception rooms. Period details, timber floors, fireplaces and tall windows give the interiors much of their character.

The first floor contains seven bedrooms and four shower rooms. Above, the second floor currently provides two further en-suite bedrooms, another shower room and a substantial open space, with the selling agent noting the possibility of creating two additional bedrooms.

Alongside the château stands perhaps my favourite part of the entire property: its private chapel. Built in 1894, it remains consecrated and retains its stained glass, stonework and bell tower. According to the selling agent, its consecrated status means it can still be used for religious weddings and baptisms.

And the château and chapel are only the beginning.

Elsewhere on the estate are two guest houses and a separate farmhouse, considerably expanding the available accommodation. The farmhouse contains a large kitchen and dining space, a triple-aspect sitting room, four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with an in-ground swimming pool nearby.

The wider estate extends to approximately 27.63 hectares (68.3 acres) and includes four barns, a stable, paddocks, pasture and extensive woodland. Mature trees, long avenues and substantial entrance gates contribute to the feeling of arriving at a private domain, while the relatively isolated position provides a considerable degree of privacy.

There are practical considerations too. A recently installed central-heating system can make use of wood sourced from the estate itself, while the property uses septic sanitation.

With the château, chapel, additional accommodation and extensive grounds, the property could lend itself to a number of uses. The selling agent highlights potential for hospitality, weddings and events, and equestrian activities, subject to the relevant permissions and regulations. Equally, it could simply remain an extraordinary private country estate.
